Short Answer:
- How can scientists determine the relative age of rocks and fossils in an area?
- How are the carbon cycle and the oxygen cycle interrelated?
- Using the process of photosynthesis, describe how the carbon and oxygen cycles interact.
- Explain how the crystals of an igneous rock are used to help classify it.
- Why do scientists believe that some tectonic plates are moving away from each other?
- When digging up fossils, what evidence might a scientist find that would give clues that the area was once an ocean?
- How can the ocean floor be created and/or destroyed?
- How are tectonic plates able to move and shift? What characteristics of Earth make this possible?
- Which type of tectonic plate movement results in the formation of mid-ocean ridges?
- Examining rocks that form on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge provides evidence of plate movement that supports the theory of Plate Tectonics. How does the age of the rocks closer to the ridge compare to rocks that are farther from the ridge?

Study Guide
Vocabulary:
Explain the process and the importance of photosynthesis ANSWER: Photosynthesis is the conversion of sunlight into energy by plants. The chemical process converts the energy of sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into sugar. The bonds of the sugar store the energy from the reaction. Photosynthesis allows plants to make energy from the sun. The plants use this energy for life functions. Animals eat the plants and use the energy that is inside the plants for their life functions.
How does your body obtain energy from the carbohydrates that you eat. (You can refer to one of the Reading Sciences) ANSWER: The body breaks carbohydrates down into simple sugars, and then the sugars are used as reactants in cellular respiration to release energy.
Compare and contrast the conservation of matter within the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. ANSWER: The law of conservation of matter says that matter is not created or destroyed. This relates to photosynthesis because molecularly, after the process of photosynthesis has taken place, there are the same number and kind of atoms there were at the beginning, only rearranged. Some molecules remain in the plant while others are released into the atmosphere. Similarly, matter is conserved in cellular respiration as the reaction runs backwards and releases cellular energy instead of capturing sunlight. Photosynthesis: Takes in Carbon Dioxide, Puts out Oxygen. Cellular Respiration: Takes in Oxygen, Puts out Carbon Dioxide
