Welcome!

In this elective class, students will attend art 2 times per week for 1 trimester. They will be exposed to a variety of three-dimensional art media and techniques and will create sculptural work out of wood, clay, wire, paper, found materials, etc. Our visual arts curriculum includes recognizing art as a form of communication and expression, identifying and using the elements and principles of art and design, and exploring the role of artists in society throughout history, all while having fun in a nurturing and safe environment. Students are encouraged to take risks, think critically, and solve problems visually. Students will master new art vocabulary, art methods and techniques, and will form a deeper connection to the fine arts.

Course content is based on state and national visual arts standards.

Expectations

  • Students are expected to be active participants in art class.
  • Students are expected to do their best work.
  • Students should be respectful of all classroom materials, their fellow students, their own work and the work of their peers, and the teacher.
  • Students are expected to behave in a safe manner with any and all tools and materials.
  • Students are expected to clean up after themselves completely.

Grading

It is important to note that grades are not based on a student’s innate artistic ability, nor on the result of the final project alone. Grades are comprised of a student’s work ethic, behavior, effort, and level of fulfillment of the assignment, as outlined below.

Participation/Work Ethic/Behavior: 60%

Students will receive a participation/work ethic/behavior grade for each class session.

Project Grade: 40%

Project grades are based on a rubric for each assignment, and reflect craftsmanship, creativity, ability to follow directions, and the student’s willingness to do their best work.

*IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BRING A SMOCK/OLD SHIRT TO PROTECT YOUR UNIFORM, PLEASE DO! I can store these in the classroom.

I am looking forward to an amazing year in Art class and I can’t wait to see what we create together!
